Intent
At Hugh Joicey First School we believe that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Hugh Joicey School not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.
Implementation
PE at Hugh Joicey School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, forest school ad Commando Joes.
The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
A specialist PE coach from the Newcastle United Foundation delivers high quality PE lessons that pupils enjoy each week. Each child goes swimming, on a rotation, for a term per year. In addition, pupils are encouraged to participate in a varied range of extra-curricular activities. A variety of equipment is provided at break times and pupils are encouraged to be active at these times.
Pupils attend competitive sporting events organised by the Berwick Sports Partnership with other local partnership schools. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by all pupils.
Our school vision of ‘Love one another, Love learning & Love Nature’ is a key part of the implementation of our PE and Sport curriculum.
Impact
We help motivate pupils to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our pupils learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our pupils with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
Our children love being outdoors and love being physically active. Their love of sports and competitive nature can be seen in all they do but they also learn to be kind to each other and consider the feelings of others. Our children are good winners but also good losers and they learn this through support but take it into many other areas of their lives.
